"Ho Ti" And Hokkien-log

When my mum prepares lumpia, she loves including "ho ti" or the crunchy seaweed in it. I found out last night that there is no direct Mandarin translation of "ho ti." It is one of those Hokkien terms that are difficult to find a word in Pu Tong Hua.

Unless there is any one here who can challenge that, because I am not really a linguistics expert.

Chinese-Filipinos love mixing Hokkien with Filipino or Tagalog words. The Filipino terms are in pink. Like, "Di u chia lo, ba?" (Have you eaten already?)

Or "Gua bo huat tang ki, kasi gua bo chia." (I can not go, because I do not have transportation.)

What do you call these Chinese-Filipino language fusions? Hokkien-log?

Here is something funny, "This soup--bo la bo sa." I am sure Tsinoys can understand that.

Back From The Dead

It's alive!!!

I thought I was a goner with my dad's flash disk. It got so maxed out with files and viruses, AND I CAN NOT OPEN IT ANYMORE! *gasp*

My sister was playing with the idea that I buy my dad a new one. Well, granted, flash disks are way cheaper now than the yesteryears. Still, this el cheapo is holding on to some hope... (And I lift my hands and pray...to be only yours...I mean...for the flash drive to survive...I will survive! Yeah...yeah!)

And I found the PERFECT solution! The internet is so helpful especially in times like this. And my dad's flash disk? It is like new again!

"I'm back!" the flash disk seemed to screamed at me. (And that sounds creepy...happy creepy...hmmm...I am imagining a horror story now.)

A Tale Of 3 PC Lovers

Ever heard of Charles Dickens' "A Tale of 2 Cities?" This was my inspiration for a piece I wrote for PCShopper.

I am very grateful to my 3 wonderful interviewees-- Elsie, Kikey, and Ben. My editor did not publish their beautiful and handsome photos, so I am putting them here instead!

Taking The Public Transport

"Manong (Moniker for Mr. Jeepney Driver), pasabi pag nasa Ekonomiya na, ha?"
[Manong, please warn me if we're in Ekonomiya already, ok?"]

Manong Jeepney Driver nods head.

After a few minutes...

"Nandito na ang Ekonomiya."
[We're in Ekonomiya already.]

I look around. A stretch of road. No pedestrian lane.

"So, where do I cross?"

"Right here, they open up that pink fence," Manong points to the pink fence deliberately put up by the MMDA to prevent anyone from crossing the dangerous, life-threatening road.

"Ugh...right...seryosa ka?" [You're serious?]

Manong was dead serious. He was just waiting for me to get off. Fine, I'm delaying everyone. Under my breath, "You really want to kill me, huh?"

While standing on the sidewalk, I can almost feel the wondrous stares of the passengers left on board.

"Well, I don't plan on being road kill today or any day at all."

Why am I even talking aloud to myself? A car swooshed by. Two cars. Tons of them! Right...I am going to cross that road? Who are you kidding? Looking left and right, oh well, I just walked to the nearest over pass.

Exercise.
