Jade Cabbage

I was reading The Wall Street Journal a while ago and became very excited when I read the article all about the National Palace Museum in Taiwan.

It really brought back good memories, because I have just been there last May.

The article mentioned the Jade Cabbage.

This is it!

Now, this Jade Cabbage has something to do with fertility. It was actually the dowry of Imperial Consort Jin Fei during the Qing Dynasty. The white part symbolizes purity, and the green leaves symbolize abundance.

There is another detail in the carving which are the two katydids which actually symbolize children! :P

My sister and I bought a refrigerator magnet version of it as a souvenir, so fertility will be abundant in the household! Hehe.

No seriously, the Jade Cabbage has become somewhat the Mona Lisa of the National Palace Museum. It is not very big, only a few inches long, wide, and deep. But people actually first think of it and crowd around it when they visit the museum.

When we arrived from Taiwan, we also brought with us a lot of clay (from one of our activities). This is one of our masterpieces!

See the resemblance? :P
